Howdy Brave Being,
Welcome back, dear readers. We’re nearing the end of summer here in the PNW, which means I can finally bust out the Halloween decor. Huzzah!
I’m so stoked for this season and because there has been a major surprise in our lives…
Around November of last year, we discarded our pumpkins into the neighborhood compost pile. Recently, we discovered that there’s now a massive pumpkin patch that sprang up because of it. It’s absolutely bonkers how it happened so suddenly to us, and to quote Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, “Life…uh…finds a way.”
What I’m Working On
In the last post, I shared some pictures from the remodel that me and my family have been working on. After a couple of years designing the space and almost eight months of construction, it’s coming to a close, and we’re about to move my mom into her new home.
In between, I’ve been keeping busy editing comics and pitches for indie creators. Here are some that I can talk about:
ONE-SHOT
One-Shot is live on Kickstarter! I’ve mentioned this book before and as its editor, I can let you in on a secret…it’s high-octane entertainment and a chaotic good time. If you like Dungeons & Dragons and The Suicide Squad, you will LOVE this story and it is, like the title suggests, a one-shot, which means it’s a standalone comic. So, not only will you get a beginning, middle, and end all in one go, you’ll also get a radical tale about a group of misfits on a perilous and epic quest.
We’ve got only one week left to hit our goal, and with Kickstarter’s all-or-nothing funding model, it’s vital that we make it so this book can get made. So what are you waiting for?!
AMELIA SKY
Amelia Sky #1-4 is headed to Kickstarter this spooky season! I’ve been editing this sci-fi horror series with the writer Jermaine M. Boyd for many years now, and what I love about it is that it’s a slow-burn mystery with a backdrop of sci-fi strangeness, apocalyptic alien horrors, secret conspiracies and government corruption. Amplifying the mystery are the haunting colors and crisp lines from Martina Niosi for issue #4 and Gwynn Tavares’ color-washed art in issues #1-3. Both artists create such a suspenseful and terrifying aesthetic that’s just positively oozing with danger and fear. Think of Amelia Sky as The Last of Us meets The Bourne Series.
One way to help our campaign have a leg-up is to follow us by clicking the “Notify me on launch” button HERE. Follows help us with Kickstarter's algorithm. The more followers we have, the more likely we'll be featured on their website and in their newsletter, and thus reach more folks. Plus, you’ll get an email on launch day so you don’t miss our early bird special (i.e., a discounted book!).
CONTAINMENT BREACH
Containment Breach Vol. 4 reached funding and production has wrapped thanks to the editors at Fugitive Poems! So backers will be getting their books next month. ICYMI: I have a comic in the book with the incredible Jack Van Thomme, and if you missed the campaign, it will be for sale soon via the Fugitive Poems store.
What in the world is happening above? Stay tuned to find out! ;)
Tips & Tricks of the Trade
I’ve been reassessing my newsletter lately. I have a lot to share about my trade as a comic book editor and writer, and I don’t think this section does it justice any longer. So, for all those interested in my particular trade secrets, I’ll be giving this section it’s own recurring series. Stay tuned.
Things I’m Digging
I’ve largely been digging the blue sky weather, but to take a break from the heat, I’ve been enjoying a few television series this summer.
Foundation, seasons 1-2: My husband and I have been watching Foundation (2022) based off of the Isaac Asimov series. It is outstanding. Truly sci-fi at its best.
Merlin, seasons 1-5: I’ve been rewatching the British television series Merlin (2008). I just LOVE Arthurian legends and this show, with its five seasons, covers many of those surrounding The Once and Future King and, of course, his master of magic, Merlin. Plus, there are so many guest actors that ended up cast in Game of Thrones (2011), so it’s a lot of fun to see them in a different setting, albeit still the fantasy genre.
The Great, seasons 1-3: We finished watching The Great (2020) about Catherine the Great and her husband Peter. I’m so sad it’s over. I hate it when things end, but then again, everything must come to an end at some point. This show’s comedy has been a light in my life and I’ll miss it, well, greatly. The costumes were just phenomenal and the cast unforgettable. I hope that everyone involved in it is proud of themselves because it was so excellently executed. Huzzah!
Merry Musings
Today’s Merry Musing comes courtesy of Joanna Greenbaum, a good friend and psychotherapist who specializes in menstrual cycles, hormones, and mental health. She recently offered the quote below, with slideshow, and it’s a great reminder about menstrual health and being nicer to ourselves. I think it can apply to life in general as well. Follow her @inflowwithjo for more of her incredible insights.
Thanks for reading!
